Important Travel Notice: Tokaido Shinkansen Suspension

Due to a derailment of a maintenance vehicle between Toyohashi Station and Mikawa-Anjo Station, the Tokaido Shinkansen service is currently suspended.
This disruption affects travel between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Shin-Osaka, some of the most popular destinations for travelers.

Service Disruption Details

As of July 23rd, the Tokaido Shinkansen has returned to normal operation from the first train of the day.

As of 8:00 PM on July 22nd, it has been determined that it will be difficult to resume full operation of the Tokaido Shinkansen, which is currently suspended in some sections, by the end of today.

  • Trains between Tokyo Station and Nagoya Station will be suspended for the entire day, except for some "Kodama" trains.
  • Trains between Nagoya Station and Shin-Osaka Station will be suspended for the entire day, except for:
    • Some "Hikari" trains
    • Some "Kodama" trains
    • "Nozomi 270"
    • "Nozomi 272"

Currently, two trains per hour are operating between Tokyo Station and Hamamatsu Station, and between Nagoya Station and Shin-Osaka Station, stopping at all stations.

As of 8:00 AM on July 22nd, the Tokaido Shinkansen is not operating between Tokyo and Nagoya and between Nagoya and Osaka. The earliest expected time for resuming operations is after 12:00 PM. Please note that this timing is subject to change based on the progress of recovery work.

Train operations have been suspended due to the derailment of a maintenance vehicle.
The maintenance vehicle is unable to move on its own and requires crane assistance for removal. Therefore, a significant amount of time is needed for recovery. 

Affected Travel Plans

For travelers heading west from Tokyo to Nagoya, Kyoto, or Osaka, and those traveling east from Osaka to Nagoya and Tokyo, please consider adjusting your travel plans and wait for the full resumption of services.

You may be able to get a refund directly at the ticket counter at the station especially if your reserved train is confirmed to be cancelled, so please check at the station first for how your tickets can be handled.

Please note that if you have tickets for the canceled Shinkansen, you can get a refund at the station up to one year from the date of purchase. Therefore, there is no need to rush and stand in long lines for refunds on the day of the cancellation.
