Which Shinkansen Is Best from Tokyo to Kyoto?

This article is written by Tetsu, our Shinkansen Expert — the go-to expert for train routes, seating tips, and travel hacks.

Which Shinkansen Is Best from Tokyo to Kyoto?

Traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen is one of the most comfortable and efficient journeys in Japan — just around 2 hours and 15 minutes from city center to city center.
But with multiple train types to choose from, which one is best for you? Let’s break it down.

The Nozomi – Fastest and Most Convenient

The Nozomi is the fastest Shinkansen on the Tokaido Line, reaching Kyoto in as little as 2 hours and 15 minutes.
It stops at fewer stations than the other trains, making it ideal for travelers who want to maximize sightseeing time.

At Shinkansen-ticket.com, we sell tickets for the Nozomi only — the fastest and most popular option for Tokyo–Kyoto travelers.

Book your Nozomi tickets easily below:

Tip: If you have a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), please note that Nozomi trains are not covered. You’ll need to use the Hikari or Kodama instead.

The Hikari – JR Pass Friendly

The Hikari is slightly slower than the Nozomi (about 2 hours and 40 minutes), but is the fastest option available for JR Pass users.
It stops at a few more stations, such as Shizuoka and Maibara, but still offers a smooth and scenic ride.

If you’re traveling with the JR Pass, this is your go-to train.

The Kodama – For Slow Travel Lovers

The Kodama stops at all stations between Tokyo and Kyoto, taking roughly 4 hours.
It’s not ideal for short-term visitors, but for travelers who want to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace (and maybe get off at smaller towns along the way), it’s an option worth considering.

Onboard Comfort & Amenities

All Shinkansen trains are known for cleanliness and comfort.
Here’s what you can expect onboard:

  • Free Wi-Fi on all Shinkansen services

  • Power outlets at window seats (and at every seat in Green Cars)

  • Food & drink service in Green Cars — you can order beverages, bento boxes, and snacks directly from your seat

  • Mount Fuji views!
On sunny days, seats on the north side (D/E seats, or C/D seats in Green Cars) offer the best views of Mt. Fuji between Odawara and Shizuoka.

Tip: When you book with shinkansen-ticket.com, you can request Mt. Fuji–side seats or even reserve a spot in the oversized-luggage section — both free of charge.

Shinkansen Timetable: First and Last Trains from Tokyo to Kyoto

If you're planning your trip carefully, it's helpful to know the Shinkansen timetable between Tokyo and Kyoto.
Here are the approximate times for each type of train:

  • Nozomi — First train: 6:00 a.m. (arrives Kyoto 8:08 a.m.) / Last train: 9:24 p.m. (arrives Kyoto 11:31 p.m.)

  • Hikari — First train: 6:21 a.m. (arrives Kyoto 9:06 a.m.) / Last train: 8:12 p.m. (arrives Kyoto 11:01 p.m.)

  • Kodama — First train: 6:57 a.m. (arrives Kyoto 10:34 a.m.) / Last train: 7:57 p.m. (arrives Kyoto 11:25 p.m.)

Tip: The Nozomi is the fastest and most frequent service, but JR Pass users cannot take it — choose the Hikari or Kodama instead.

Tokyo Station & Kyoto Station: What to Expect

Tokyo Station (sometimes referred to as Tokyo Central Station by visitors) is located in the heart of the capital’s Marunouchi district.
It’s one of Japan’s busiest transport hubs — a key Shinkansen connection point linking eastern and western Japan, as well as local JR lines and the Tokyo Metro.

If you’d like to learn how to navigate it smoothly, check out our Tokyo Station Guide before your trip.

Kyoto Station is equally convenient — a modern gateway to Japan’s ancient capital, with easy access to temples, shrines, and hotels.
Both stations are equipped with coin lockers, convenience stores, and plenty of dining options for travelers waiting for their trains.

My Experience

I always choose the Nozomi when going from Tokyo to Kyoto — it’s fast, quiet, and the scenery around Mount Fuji is unforgettable.
If you can, book a window seat on the Fuji side, grab a coffee at Tokyo Station before boarding, and enjoy the smoothest ride of your trip.
