In the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2025, published by global research firm Euromonitor International, Tokyo secured the No. 3 spot worldwide, following Paris and Madrid.

This influential index evaluates 100 global cities across six key categories:
tourism infrastructure, tourism performance, safety & health, economic strength, sustainability, and destination appeal.

Japan Shines with Three Cities in the Top 20

Japan was the only country with three cities ranked in the global Top 20:

• Tokyo – 3rd

• Osaka – 11th

• Kyoto – 19th

Other Japanese cities such as Sapporo (50th) and Fukuoka (64th) also made the list, reinforcing Japan’s position as one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations.

Tokyo performed especially well in tourism infrastructure and safety, two areas that matter greatly to international travelers.
