Every late August, the streets of Koenji in Tokyo come alive with energy, music, and smiles.
The Koenji Awa Odori Festival, one of Japan’s three major Awa Odori events, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Around 10,000 dancers from dozens of performance teams, called ren, parade through shopping streets and station-front avenues to the lively beat of traditional music.
Awa Odori originated in Tokushima Prefecture over 400 years ago and has become hugely popular among international travelers in recent years.
If you want to experience the vibrant energy of Japanese traditional dance but can’t make the trip to Tokushima, the Koenji Awa Odori offers a rare opportunity to enjoy an authentic festival atmosphere right here in Tokyo.
The passion of the performers and the excitement of the crowd rival that of the original.
