Japan Scenic Trains #1: Beginning the Journey with GranClass

Japan Scenic Trains #1: Beginning the Journey with GranClass

[PR] This page is in collaboration with East Japan Railway Company.

Traveling by Shinkansen is often associated with speed and efficiency. In this five-part series, we focus on a different perspective—traveling with GranClass, the highest seating class available on selected JR East Shinkansen services, and how it can shape the overall journey.

This series explores how GranClass transforms travel time into a calm and comfortable experience, from the moments before departure to time spent onboard. At the same time, it looks beyond the train itself, introducing destinations and travel ideas that can be reached by Shinkansen.

Through GranClass experiences and destination-based stories, we share ideas for enjoying Japan at a more relaxed pace, where the journey and the destination are closely connected by rail travel.

In this first article, we begin with the start of the journey, focusing on GranClass departure moments and onboard refreshments that set the tone for the trip.

Departure & Refreshments: Where the Journey Begins

There’s something special about Tokyo Station before a long journey.
Standing in front of the red-brick Marunouchi building, you already feel that your trip has begun—long before the train starts moving.

On this day, I was traveling from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori on the Shinkansen, choosing GranClass, one of the seating classes available on selected JR East Shinkansen services.
What I noticed first wasn’t luxury in an obvious sense, but a feeling of calm and space—something that’s surprisingly rare at a busy station.

Before boarding, there’s time to pause.
At the exclusive lounge inside Tokyo Station, the atmosphere is quiet and unhurried. You can enjoy a drink, sit down, and take a breath before the journey ahead.
It feels less like “waiting for a train” and more like easing into travel mode.

With ticket in hand, it’s time to board. Inside GranClass, the space around each seat immediately stands out.
The cabin feels serene, with soft lighting and a layout that allows you to settle in comfortably.
The service is attentive but unobtrusive—everything happens naturally, without drawing attention to itself.

One of the highlights of GranClass is that food and drinks are included*.
Shortly after departure, refreshments are served directly at your seat. Whether it’s a glass of wine, water, or a light meal, it’s all part of the experience.
There’s no rush, no need to plan ahead—just enjoy what’s offered as the scenery begins to change outside.

*Some GranClass routes/trains do not offer food or drinks and may not have a GranClass Attendant on board.

What I appreciated most was how the departure itself felt unhurried.
From the station lounge to the onboard service, the journey didn’t start with stress. Instead, it began quietly, comfortably, and at your own pace.

For travelers who see transportation as part of the journey—not just a way to get from A to B—this kind of start can make all the difference.
