Starting July 1, 2025, travelers on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen will have more flexibility when managing their luggage.
A new shared storage area will be made available in certain sections of the train, offering additional space for larger items—no reservation required.
Some deck areas (the space near train doors) on 16-car Shinkansen trains will now be open to passengers as shared luggage zones.
This is a trial program aimed at making train travel smoother during the busy travel seasons.
Start Date: July 1, 2025
Lines: Tokaido & Sanyo Shinkansen (16-car trains only)
Locations: In the deck area of Cars 3, 5, 7, 9, 13, and 15
Access: No reservation required
Please note: These are shared-use areas. Do not leave valuables unattended. JR is not responsible for theft or damage.
JR encourages passengers to store their bags in the overhead racks or at their seat whenever possible.
However, with the increasing number of travelers and large suitcases, this new shared area is being offered as an additional option, especially during high-demand periods.
If your bag measures over 160 cm (63 in) and up to 250 cm (98 in) in total dimensions, it is considered “oversized luggage.”
In such cases, passengers are still advised to reserve a seat with a designated luggage space when possible.
This new shared area can also serve as a backup option, but availability is not guaranteed, and you are responsible for monitoring your luggage at all times.
Keep valuables with you at all times
Use luggage delivery services (“takuhaibin”) when traveling with multiple large items
Travel light where possible—Japanese trains prioritize compact and efficient design
This new shared space policy is part of JR’s efforts to improve the travel experience for all passengers.
By using storage space considerately, we can all help keep the Shinkansen clean, efficient, and comfortable for everyone.
