If you’ll be in Tokyo this September, don’t forget to look up! On Saturday, September 13, 2025, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s acrobatic flight team, Blue Impulse, will perform a spectacular demonstration flight to celebrate the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships.
The centerpiece of the performance will take place directly above the National Stadium (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), starting around 12:25 p.m. and lasting about 10 minutes. Blue Impulse will paint the Tokyo sky with their trademark smoke trails, just as they last did during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics—making this their first flight over central Tokyo in four years.
After the main display above the stadium, the jets will continue their flight until about 12:50 p.m., passing over some of Tokyo’s most iconic landmarks:
Tokyo Skytree
Tokyo Station
Tokyo Tower
Shibuya Station area
Yoyogi Park area
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Shinjuku)
For the flight route, check the World Athletics Championships official website.
A rehearsal flight is also scheduled for the day before, Friday, September 12, around 1:15 p.m., following the same route.
Please note that flight times and routes may change depending on weather conditions.
While the jets are visible across the city, some of the best viewing spots include:
Around the National Stadium: The main attraction area. Open spaces like Jingu Gaien or Shinjuku Gyoen provide wide sky views.
Tokyo Skytree & Asakusa area: Catch the jets with the Skytree as a dramatic backdrop.
Tokyo Tower & Shiba Park: Perfect for photos, combining Tokyo’s classic landmark with Blue Impulse in the sky.
Shibuya & Yoyogi Park: A lively area where you can look up and enjoy the unexpected aerial show.
Wherever you are in central Tokyo, you’ll likely hear the roar of the jets first—so be ready to look up quickly!
This is a rare opportunity to see Blue Impulse soaring over Tokyo’s skyline, celebrating an international event that returns to the city after 34 years. Whether you’re near the National Stadium or sightseeing around Tokyo Tower or Skytree, be sure to have your camera ready—the smoke trails in the clear end-of-summer sky will make for unforgettable photos.
