Echigo-Yuzawa is less a single resort than a gateway — Kagura, Mitsumata, and Tashiro spread across a high ridge behind the station, linked to Naeba by the Dragondola, one of the world's longest gondolas. High elevation means powder lingers here long after lower resorts turn slushy.

These aren't three separate resorts — they're three base areas of the same ski area, linked by lifts and gondolas up on the mountain. Which one you head for from the station just decides where you start your day.

Echigo-Yuzawa town has been a hot-spring stop since well before skiing arrived — ryokan, public baths, and izakaya cluster around the station.

  • Ryokan & hotels — Options range from traditional onsen ryokan to modern hotels, most a short walk or shuttle from the station.
  • Snow country literature — This is the setting of Kawabata's novel "Snow Country" — the old bathhouse he frequented still operates.

Buses leave from outside Echigo-Yuzawa Station and run up the valley to Mitsumata, Tashiro and on to Naeba. Timetable below is provisional, based on the 2025–26 season (December 13 – March 22). Please confirm the latest schedule with the operator before your trip.

📌 Two kinds of bus, two different stops. EXP Express buses run non-stop from the station to Mitsumata, then pull into the rotary in front of Tashiro Station. LOCAL Local buses make intermediate stops and set down at Futai-Tashiro, a roadside stop on Route 17 — not in the resort car park. Ski and snowboard bags are ¥100 extra either way.

What's the difference between Kagura, Mitsumata and Tashiro?
They're three base areas of the same ski area, connected by lifts on the mountain. Mitsumata and Tashiro are reached by bus from Echigo-Yuzawa Station; the Kagura area itself has no road access and is reached by lift from either one.
Which area should I ski — Kagura, Mitsumata, or Tashiro?
Mitsumata is best for families and beginners, Kagura for powder and views at altitude, and Tashiro for a quieter, scenic introduction. All three share a pass.
Do I need a bus from the station?
Yes, for Kagura, Mitsumata, or Tashiro — buses run from outside the station and take about 18 minutes to Mitsumata (¥400) or 27 minutes to Tashiro (¥570). No reservation is needed; pay on board, plus ¥100 for a ski or snowboard bag. GALA Yuzawa alone has a station right inside the resort.
Can I reach Naeba from here?
Yes — the Dragondola links the Kagura area directly to Naeba in about 15 minutes, though a combined lift ticket is needed. The same bus route also continues to Naeba by road.
Is a day trip from Tokyo possible?
Yes — about 70 minutes each way by Shinkansen makes this an easy day trip, though the elevation and variety reward a longer stay.
