Most Tokaido Shinkansen trains depart from both Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station, so in many cases you can board the same train from either station. Choosing the most convenient departure station can save you time and make your journey more comfortable, especially if you're staying in Tokyo or arriving from one of the city's airports.
The below can help you decide which station is the best choice based on where you're staying.
Recommended departure station is Tokyo Station if you're staying near:
- Tokyo Station, Marunouchi, & Nihonbashi: Walking distance or a short train ride
- Ginza: Easy access by JR or Tokyo Metro
- Ueno: Direct JR Yamanote Line connection
- Akihabara: Quick ride on the JR Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line
- Ikebukuro: Easy access by Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line or JR
Departing from Shinagawa Station is recommended if you're staying near:
- Shibuya: Direct JR Yamanote Line connection
- Roppongi: Convenient via the Toei Oedo Line and JR connections
- Haneda Airport: Direct access via the Keikyu Line in about 20 minutes
- Odaiba: Easier access via the Rinkai Line and JR or Yurikamome Line and JR
Departing from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station, if you're staying near:
- Shinjuku: Both stations are easily accessible by JR. Shinagawa is often slightly quicker
Tokyo Station
Tokyo Station is Japan's largest Shinkansen hub and the starting point for the Tokaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Joetsu, Yamagata, Akita, and Hokkaido Shinkansen lines. If you're staying in central or eastern Tokyo, or plan to shop or dine before your trip, Tokyo Station is usually the most convenient option.
Shinagawa Station
Shinagawa Station is the first stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen after Tokyo Station. It is generally less crowded and offers excellent access from southern Tokyo and Haneda Airport. If you're staying near Shinagawa, Shibuya, or arriving by air, boarding here can save both time and walking distance.
Tip: Your reserved seat remains the same whether you board at Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station, as long as your ticket is valid for the train. If your train departs from Tokyo Station, you may also board it at Shinagawa Station without changing your reservation.
