About the resort

A working town, a serious mountain

Furano sits inland, away from Hokkaido's coastal moisture — which means colder temperatures and drier, lighter snow. Unlike purpose-built resort villages, Furano is a real farm town with its own rhythms, and a Furano ski area serious enough to have hosted World Cup races.

❄️ Inland-dry powder

Furano's inland location means colder, drier snow than Hokkaido's coastal resorts.

🏆 World Cup pedigree

Furano has hosted World Cup alpine ski races on its Furano-dake side.

🏘 A real town

Unlike purpose-built resort villages, Furano is a working farm town with its own local life.

🌻 Famous scenery

In summer Furano's lavender fields are iconic; in winter, the same slopes turn to powder.

Village info

A farm town first, a resort second

Furano town has its own life outside of skiing — farming, dairy, and (in summer) famous lavender fields — giving it a different character from purpose-built resort villages.

  • Furano town — A real, year-round town with local shops, markets, and restaurants beyond the ski season.
  • Kitanomine area — The base area closest to the lifts, with a cluster of lodges and restaurants.
  • Local dairy & produce — Furano's farmland produces well-regarded dairy, melon, and wine.
  • Good to know — Expect a more local, low-key evening scene than purpose-built resort villages — Furano isn't trying to be Niseko.

Restaurant & nightlife

Farm-town food, genuinely local

Furano's dining draws on its farming roots — dairy, produce, and hearty regional cooking.

  • Furano curry — A local specialty worth seeking out, built on the area's own vegetables.
  • Dairy & melon — Furano's farms produce excellent milk, cheese, and (in season) famously sweet melon.
  • Kitanomine restaurants — A cluster of casual restaurants and izakaya sits near the base area.
  • Good to know — Options are more limited than purpose-built resort towns — this is genuine small-town Hokkaido.

When to go

Furano season at a glance

Late November – early April

January and February bring the coldest, driest snow of the season, prized by those who've skied Hokkaido's coastal resorts and want something colder still.

Furano FAQ

Should I come by train from Tokyo or fly to New Chitose?
The overland train from Tokyo takes 9–10 hours but is a scenic option, especially if you're combining Furano with other stops. Flying into New Chitose and transferring by rail takes about 3.5–4 hours. If you're flying, note that Asahikawa Airport is actually closer to Furano — about an hour by direct winter bus.
What's the easiest Furano access from Tokyo?
Take the Hokkaido Shinkansen (Hayabusa) to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, then a limited express and the Furano line via Sapporo to Furano Station. From there it's a short taxi or Furano bus to the ski area base.
How far is Furano Station from the slopes?
About 15 minutes. The Furano Bus "Lavender-go" route runs from Furano Station to the resort base (New Furano Prince Hotel) — no reservation needed, pay on board. Note that buses toward the resort run from around midday, so for an early arrival a taxi (about 15 min) is easier. The same bus connects Asahikawa Airport with the resort in about 80 minutes if you fly in.
How is Furano different from Niseko?
Furano is a real, working farm town rather than a purpose-built international resort village — expect a more local, low-key atmosphere with colder, drier snow.
Is Furano good for beginners?
Yes — about 30% of terrain is beginner-friendly, with good learning areas at both Furano-dake and Kitanomine.
How does the train package work?
Book online and receive a QR voucher by email. At the station, scan the voucher at a ticket machine to print your tickets, then ride. Seats are reserved, so you're guaranteed a place even on busy winter weekends.
