自 2024 年 3 月 16 日起，東海道新幹線列車上將全面禁止吸菸。
此前，東海道新幹線列車於 2023 年秋季宣布取消車廂內的吸菸區。
東海道新幹線上的吸菸環境背景：
2007年，東海道新幹線列車上的吸菸區改為指定吸菸室，所有座位均為非吸菸區。
然而，隨著「700系列」等較老列車型號在2020年退役，東海道新幹線列車上的所有座位都變成了無菸座位，而較新的列車型號仍然提供吸煙室，以滿足某些乘客（如商務旅客）的需求。
為了應對日益增強的健康意識和吸煙率的下降，JR東海決定在2022年取消所有剩餘的吸煙室，包括最初指定的四個吸煙區以及其中一個改建為“商務包廂”的區域。該公司還決定在2024年3月取消剩餘的三個吸菸室。
吸煙室空間的未來用途：
以前用作吸煙室的空間將被重新利用，以提供緊急飲用水，從而增強災害應對能力。
此外，為了改善車廂環境，正在進行一些改變，包括到 2023 年 10 月底停止銷售車廂，並在東海道新幹線沿線的車站月台上引入咖啡和冰淇淋自動販賣機。
