Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen Luggage Rules
Traveling with luggage on the Tokaido Shinkansen is simple, but passengers carrying large suitcases should be aware of JR's baggage regulations before boarding.
Standard Luggage (Up to 160cm)
Luggage with total dimensions (length + width + height) of 160 cm (63 inches) or less can be brought onboard without any reservation. Most standard suitcases fall within this limit.
You may store your luggage:
- In the overhead luggage rack
- In the space in front of your seat
- In designated storage areas available on some trains

Oversized Luggage (160 cm to 250 cm)
If the total dimension of your luggage exceed 160 cm but do not exceed 250 cm, JR requires passengers to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage storage when traveling on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
Examples of oversized luggage may include:
- Extra-large suitcases
- Large travel cases
- Certain sports equipment
You can request a seat with an oversized baggage storage in Seat Arrangement Request section.

Important Notice
Passengers traveling with oversized luggage without the required reservation may be charged an oversized baggage fee of ¥1,000 and may be directed to store their luggage in a location designated by train staff.
Luggage Larger Than 250 cm
Luggage with total dimensions exceeding 250 cm (98 inches) cannot be brought onboard the Shinkansen.
If you are traveling with exceptionally large baggage, we recommend using a luggage delivery service before your journey.
Traveling with Strollers and Sports Equipment
Strollers, musical instruments, and sports equipment can generally be brought on board. However, passengers who wish to use the space behind the last row of seats are required to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage storage.
