Can I bring my skis or snowboard on the Shinkansen?
Yes — and it's free. Unlike the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto and Osaka, the lines serving ski country (Joetsu, Hokuriku, Tohoku, Yamagata) require no oversized-baggage reservation. Store your bag on the rack or behind the last row of seats.
How do I receive my ticket?
After booking, your QR voucher is delivered by email. At the station, scan it at a ticket machine to print your tickets — machines have English menus, so no Japanese is needed.
How far in advance can I book?
Shinkansen seats open for sale 1 month before departure. Book as soon as your dates are fixed — trains to ski areas fill up quickly on winter weekends and holidays.
Can I ski as a day trip from Tokyo?
Absolutely. GALA Yuzawa is 75 minutes from Tokyo Station and the Shinkansen station is inside the resort — morning train, full ski day, back in Tokyo for dinner.
Do trains stop when it snows heavily?
Rarely. The Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines were built for snow country, with sprinkler and slab-track systems that keep trains running through heavy snowfall — one more reason the train beats the highway in winter.
